FAQ's
Everything we get asked before an order goes out — sizing, choosing a grass, delivery, and what to do once the pallets land.
Ordering
How much sod do I need?
Measure the length and width of the area in feet, multiply them together for total square footage, then divide by 450 to get your pallet count. Add 5 to 10 percent extra if the space has curves, beds, or odd corners you’ll need to cut around. See the sizing table.
How many square feet does a pallet cover?
450 square feet per pallet.
Can I order online, or do I need to call?
Both work. Order directly through the site if you already know which grass and how many pallets you need. Call 830.349.3320 if you want help figuring either of those out first.
What’s the minimum order?
One pallet for delivery in our immediate service area.
Can I mix grass types in one order?
Yes. It’s common to order Raleigh St. Augustine for a shaded front yard and a Bermuda variety for a sunnier backyard in the same delivery. Please note, you cannot mix grass types into single pallets.
Do you sell grass seed, or only sod?
Sod only. Two of our four grasses — Tahoma 31 Bermuda and Tifway 419 Bermuda — are sterile hybrids and can’t be grown from seed in the first place.
How far in advance should I place my order?
Same day delivery is available if order placed before noon. Next-day delivery available for placed before 8pm. Call to confirm during peak spring and fall seasons.
Choosing a grass
Which grass is best for a shaded yard?
Raleigh St. Augustine. It’s the only one of our four built to hold color without full sun.
Which grass uses the least water?
Tahoma 31 Bermuda. In national trials it used about 18% less water than TifTuf — the lowest use of anything we carry.
Which grass handles the most foot traffic?
Tifway 419 Bermuda and Tahoma 31 Bermuda both recover quickly from heavy wear. Tifway 419 has the longer track record on sports fields; Tahoma 31 edges it out slightly in traffic-tolerance trials.
Which grass looks the nicest?
That’s subjective, but Palisades Zoysia gets the most comments for its dense, fine-bladed, manicured look.
What’s the most drought-tolerant grass you sell?
Palisades Zoysia. University trials documented it surviving up to 15 weeks without irrigation before showing stress.
Can I get a recommendation without ordering anything?
Yes. Call 830.349.3320 and describe your yard — sun exposure, traffic, and whether water use matters to you. We’ll tell you which of the four fits, no obligation.
Delivery
Where do you deliver?
See our Contact page for the full list of cities we currently service. If yours isn’t listed, call and we’ll confirm whether delivery is available.
How much does delivery cost?
Pallet include delivery withing in our standard delivery area. Contact us for pricing outside that range.
Do I need to be home for delivery?
No, you do not need to be a home, our driver will in the best location or you can be home to direct our driver.
What should I do with the sod if I can’t lay it right away?
Keep pallets in the shade and water them lightly if they’ll sit more than a few hours. Sod is a living product — the sooner it’s down and watered, the better it roots.
Installation & care
How soon after delivery should I lay the sod?
Within 24 hours. Sod stacked on a pallet generates heat and starts to decline quickly, especially in summer.
How often do I need to water new sod?
Daily for the first two to three weeks, until the roots take hold. After that, taper to once or twice a week depending on the grass and season. Specifics vary slightly by variety — see each grass’s product page for its exact schedule.
How do I know when new sod has rooted?
Try the tug test. Give a corner piece a gentle pull. If it resists and doesn’t lift, the roots have taken hold.
When can I mow new sod for the first time?
Once it passes the tug test — usually somewhere between 2 and 4 weeks depending on the grass. Mowing too early before roots are established can pull the sod up.
Do you offer installation, or just the sod itself?
We do not offer sod installation.
Pricing & payment
How much does sod cost per pallet?
Pricing varies by grass, from $165to $325 per pallet depending on the variety. See each grass’s product page for current pricing.
What payment methods do you accept?
All major credit cards, Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
Do you offer bulk or commercial pricing?
Yes, contact us directly for large or recurring orders.
About The Grass Yard
Why do you only sell four grasses?
Because those four cover the situations that actually come up in Texas yards: shade, low water, heavy traffic, and a lawn that’s meant to be looked at. A smaller lineup also means every pallet moves fast, so nothing sits around losing freshness before it reaches you.
Are you licensed?
Yes. The Grass Yard is licensed by the Texas Department of Agriculture, license #0865059.
How do I get in touch if my question isn’t answered here?
Call 830.349.3320 or email info@thegrassyard.com. See our Contact page for hours and full details.
Still not sure which grass?
Describe your yard — sun exposure, traffic, water use — and we’ll tell you which of the four fits. No obligation.
