Tahoma 31 Bermuda

Tahoma 31 is the grass built to survive both extremes. Oklahoma State spent years developing it, and in national trials it used about 18% less water than TifTuf while testing up to 75% more cold-tolerant than older Bermuda varieties. Most Bermudas are good at one of those, not both.

What it’s actually good at

Uses less water than any other grass we carry

Survives a hard freeze noticeably better than Tifway 419 or older hybrid Bermudas

Ranked a top performer for traffic tolerance in national turfgrass trials

Recovers from wear and fills in faster than TifTuf in side-by-side comparisons

Handles a bit more shade than most Bermudas, though it’s still fundamentally a sun grass

A detail worth knowing before you order

The name comes from a Native American word meaning “frozen water.” It’s a nod to the trait that sets this grass apart — cold survival most Bermudas can’t touch — and a decent shorthand for remembering what makes it different from Tifway 419 or Celebration.

Care once it’s down

Mow between 0.5 and 2 inches. Water deeply and infrequently rather than a little every day; that pattern trains deeper roots and is a big part of why this grass handles drought as well as it does. Standard Bermuda fertilizing schedule, nothing extra needed.

Common questions

Is this actually better than TifTuf, or just marketed that way?

Independently tested, not just marketed. National Turfgrass Evaluation Program trials measured roughly 18% lower water use compared to TifTuf under the same conditions, and better cold survival across multiple test years.

Will it hold up through a Texas summer?

Yes. It was developed and tested across warm-season climates including Texas, and holds color through summer heat as well as any Bermuda we carry.

How long until it’s fully rooted?

About 2 to 3 weeks with consistent watering, similar to other Bermuda sod, though it tends to knit together slightly faster than TifTuf or Tifway 419 in side-by-side trials.
